The Philippines has been involved in microbiome research initiatives similar to the American Gut Project. Notably, the Microsetta Initiative—an expansion of the American Gut Project—launched its first global pilot in the Philippines in collaboration with the LifeScience Institute. This initiative aims to engage citizen scientists worldwide in microbiome studies, collecting biological samples and lifestyle data to better understand the human microbiome across diverse populations. The Philippine pilot focuses on exploring how lifestyle and health parameters vary due to the country's unique geography and cultural diversity, providing valuable insights for global microbiome research.

Additionally, the Asian Gut Project seeks to sequence human microbiomes across Asia, including the Philippines. This project is part of a broader effort to analyze microbial communities globally, with the goal of understanding how diet, lifestyle, and disease affect the balance of bacteria in the gut.

GLOBE Observer App (NASA): People in the Philippines use the GLOBE Observer app to collect environmental data. It helps monitor the atmosphere, land, and mosquito habitats. This supports global research on climate and microbial environments.

Blue CARES Project (UP Diliman): The Blue CARES project trains citizens to monitor marine environments. It includes water quality and microbial testing in coastal areas. Data helps protect ecosystems like coral reefs and seagrass beds.

Bantay Kalikasan – ABS-CBN Foundation: Volunteers in Batangas collect data on coral reefs and mangroves. They use simple tools and devices to record environmental changes. The project supports both conservation and community awareness.

Discoveries Made Through Public Contributions

1. Antibiotics Unearthed: Engaging Students in Soil Microbe Research

The "Antibiotics Unearthed" project, run by the Microbiology Society in the UK, involves students and the public in collecting soil samples to discover new antibiotic-producing microorganisms. Inspired by the Small World Initiative, this program aims to address the decreasing number of effective antibiotics by tapping into the diverse microbial life found in various environments.

2. UPLB Museum of Natural History – Microbial Culture Collection

The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) houses a Microbial Culture Collection (MCC) comprising over 4,000 strains of bacteria, yeasts, molds, and other microorganisms. This collection has been instrumental in discovering novel thermophilic archaea, such as Caldivirga maquilingensis and Caldisphaera lagunensis, isolated from the hot springs of Mt. Makiling. The MCC is affiliated with the Philippine National Collection of Microorganisms and actively engages in microbial biodiversity research.

3. Student-Discovered Microbial Consortia: Educational Contributions to Microbial Research

At institutions like the University of California, Davis, and the Rochester Institute of Technology, students have participated in projects isolating and sequencing microbes from unique environments, such as salt flats and mushrooms.
